Petra 300BC ![]() Petra, in southern Jordan, was the capital of Nabataea from around 300BC until 363AD, when earthquakes destroyed the dam and cistern systems. It had been the center of a sophisticated civilization, which thrived from its situation on caravan trade routes. Petra was discovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.
