The Church of Saints Lot & Procopius 567AD
This stunning mosaic floor was discovered in 1913 and excavated in 1956. It is in an almost perfect state of preservation, having escaped defacement by iconoclasts. The friendly gentleman who led us inside told the story of its discovery by his grandmother, when she was cleaning up a cooking spill! They were bedouins, who had erected their tents atop the soil which covered these spectacular mosaics! History books tell a slightly different story, but no matter...the floors are preserved for all to view, and this man is a proud and gracious host.
