This region, east across the Dead Sea from Jerusalem, and south of Amman, (Philadelphia), Jordan, was once the eastern edge of the Roman empire, and later, the Holy Roman Empire. It includes Mt. Nebo, where Moses is thought to have died. It also includes a multitude of ancient villas and churches richly decorated with mosaic floors. The most famous is the Mosaic Map, in the Church of Saint George, which is the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land. In the early years of Christianity, it was possibly used by pilgrims to the Holy Land. Since its excavation in 1967, it has been studied by historians, archaeologists, biblical scholars...and mosaic artists! The Church of Saint George with the legendary Mosaic Map The Church of Sts.
