My Photos: Italy -- Sicily -- Siracusa -- Duomo and Piazza

The Duomo of Siracusa was built upon the site of the
5th century BC Temple of Athena,
and incorporates a row of the ancient Doric columns in a side wall.

In 878 AD, the cathedral was converted into a mosque.
In 1085 AD, it was converted back into a cathedral.

The Sicilian baroque façade of the Duomo was designed by Andrea Palma,
and constructed 1728 -- 1753
