The Duomo of Siracusa was built upon the site of the 5th century BC Temple of Athena, and incorporates a row of the ancient Doric columns in a side wall. In 878 AD, the cathedral was converted into a mosque. In 1085 AD, it was converted back into a cathedral. The Sicilian baroque façade of the Duomo was designed by Andrea Palma, and constructed 1728 -- 1753
