The Basilica of Saint Petronius, the patron saint of Bologna, is said to be the 15th-largest church in the world. It contains the relics of Saint Petronius. Construction of the church began in 1390, but was halted by Pope Pius IV in 1514 to ensure that Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome would remain the greatest church. The facade remains unfinished.
A 15th century fresco by Giovanni da Modena includes an image of Muhammad being tortured in Hell. In 2002, and again in 2006, plots to bomb the basilica were thwarted by Italian police, who believed Al Qaeda meant to destroy the fresco.
Zodiac Meridian Line inlaid in the floor accurately shows days of the year.
