Carcassonne is a walled city in southwestern France. It was strategically built on a high point in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Beginning in the 4th century, towers and walls were built around the existing village, with additional towers and ramparts built in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Church of Saint Nazaire was built on the site of a 6th century Visigoth church. Construction began in 1096, and was completed in the 12th century.
