My Photos: France -- Paris -- Musée de Louvre -- Highlights -- Salle des Caryatides

Salle des Caryatides -- or the Room of the Caryatids -- was built in 1549.  It is named for the 4 Carytid statues which serve as columns to hold up the musicians' balcony. The Caryatids, by Jean Goujon, are fashioned after the Caryatid columns of the ancient Erechtheion, on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
