Architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, and sculptor Pheidias designed and
supervised the construction of the Parthenon in the years 447 to 438 BC.

Used as an ammunition warehouse during the 17th century, the Parthenon
was bombarded by the Venetians, destroying much of the temple.

Many of the Parthenon's sculptures were removed by Lord Elgin, the
British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the 19th century.
