KIS Benches: #2 Self Control & Good Judgment

The character traits we depict on this bench are Self Control and
Good Judgment.

The following quotes illustrate these traits:

"The cyclone derives its power from a calm center.  So does a person." --Norman Vincent Peale

"If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up someplace else." --Yogi Berra

Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night is obviously the inspiration for illustrating the cyclone quote.  The students had fun working little stick-figure people into the swirling night wind.  The tree bends from the wind, but does not break.  Also depicted are butterflies in all stages of metamorphosis, floating on leaves and flying in the breeze.

On the bench face, we had fun using an elaborate maze to show using good judgement by taking the right path.  We looked at books full of ancient stone labyrinths, traditional English and French garden mazes, cornfield mazes and ancient mosaic meander patterns.  We envisioned ourselves in the woods in The Wizard of Oz movie, trying to find our way out of the darkness and into the light.
