KIS Benches: #3 Honesty, Hard Work & Positive Attitude

This bench depicts the character traits hard work, honesty and
positive attitude.

The following quotes seem to illustrate these traits well:

"What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing." --Aristotle

"The only way to have a friend, is to be one." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Fortune will call at the smiling gate." --Japanese proverb

To illustrate the benefits of hard work, I played the first minute of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.  After playing those recognizable opening notes, I asked for a show of hands of anyone who was familiar with the music.  Most everyone raised a hand.  I asked the children if they thought it had been easy to write that music.  Most said no.  And then I offered my thoughts--how grateful I am that Beethoven did put the effort into writing this piece of music, as it has enriched my life immeasurably.  I hoped to show how someone's hard work 2 centuries ago can be a positive influence today.

I introduced the work of painter Georgia O'Keeffe, and photographer Dorothea Lange to the children.  We discussed how difficult it must have been for these women to pursue their artistic lives in the early 1900s, when women were expected to stay home and raise families.

I also showed the kids examples of typical ancient Roman mosaic meander patterns, which we used on the front of the bench.
