Josefov -- Jewish Quarter This neighborhood was predominantly Jewish from the 11th century on. In 1096, it was walled off as a Jewish ghetto. Beginning in 1893, the neighborhood was mostly demolished, with only the cemetery, the Old Jewish Town Hall, and 6 Synagogues left intact. Staronova synagoga -- Old-New Synagogue 13th century
Dating from the 1400s, the Old Jewish Cemetery has over 12,000 graves. Jews were prohibited from burying their dead outside of the ghetto, so over the decades, and centuries, soil was brought in and spread on top of existing graves to make space for more gravesites. In some areas, graves are stacked 15 deep. The most recent gravesite is dated 1787. All photos are copyright protected property of Brenda Pokorny unless otherwise noted.
