My Photos: Prague -- Hradcany & Mala Strana

A view through the arch, to our next destination --
Hradcany -- Prague Castle
in Mala Strana

The magnificent towers at the Charles Bridge

Banners on the Old Town Bridge Tower:

Black Eagle -- Crest of Holy Roman Emperors
White Lion on Red -- Crest of the Kings of Bohemia
Red Checked Eagle on Blue -- Crest of the Kings of Moravia
Red Lion on Blue -- Original symbol of the Habsburgs

Charles Bridge -- Karlovy most
spans the Vltava River, also known as the Moldau River.

At intervals on the bridge stand 30 statues of saints.
The statues date from between 1683 and 1714.

Unfortunately, it was impossible to photograph the individual statues
due to the crowds of tourists, and vendors selling souvenirs all along the bridge.

Quite a view looking back down

The main entrance gate to Prague Castle has giant statues on either side.
On the right, a man being stabbed, on the left a man being clubbed!

St. George's Basilica is the oldest building standing in the castle complex, dating from the 10th century.  It houses the tomb of St. Ludmila, grandmother of St. Wenceslas.

This 16th century statue is an allegory of vanity.

Zlata ulick -- Golden Lane
Originally, the houses along this lane were where the palace guards lived.
In 1930, Franz Kafka lived at no. 22 -- the blue house.
